What it costs you to refuse

Refusing an offer has no direct cost. But: the buyer won't come back 80% of the time. The sale is lost.

Observed stat: a buyer who makes an offer is 3x more likely to close than a regular visitor. Refusing = throwing away that buying signal.

The 70% rule

Accept if the offer is ≥ 70% of your listed price. Below, counter.

Why 70%? Above, your margin stays decent vs. waiting weeks for full price. Below, a counter closes in 50%+ of cases.

Example: price €30, offer €22 (73%) → accept. Offer €18 (60%) → counter at €25. Offer €10 (33%) → refuse politely.

Counter-offer: the zone that works

Aim halfway between offer and price. Buyer offers €18 on €30 → counter at €24. Typical acceptance 60-70%.

Subtler: counter slightly above the midpoint (€25 instead of €24). Gives the impression you bent a little without looking desperate.

Template messages

Simple acceptance

"OK on the price, deal!" — simple, warm, firm.

Counter-offer

"Thanks for your offer, I can come down to €X shipping included but no lower, that's my floor." — gives a reason + closes the negotiation.

Polite refusal

"Thanks for your offer, sadly that's too low for me. If you'd like to bundle with another item we can negotiate." — leaves a door open.

When to refuse firmly

Offer <40% of price: respect yourself. Buyer is testing, will look elsewhere or come back at a fair price.

Buyer spamming low offers across multiple items: signal of a scam or reseller. Block if persistent.

Recently listed item (under 48h) at a fair price: let it breathe. Early low offers are the worst.

The "final price" trap

The buyer says "That's my final price" → don't believe it. In 70% of cases, they accept your reasonable counter.

Answer: "My real final price is €X, win-win." Don't drop out of fear of losing the sale.
