The absolute golden rule

NEVER step outside Vinted's payment system. 100% of successful scams involve a payment off-platform (direct PayPal, bank transfer, IBAN, card-to-card, cash). If someone asks, it's a scam. Period.

The 8 most common scams on the seller side

Sellers are the prime target on Vinted. Here are the techniques, decoded one by one.

1. The fake payment notification (email phishing)

How it works: The scammer contacts you to buy your item and asks for your email "to pay directly". You then receive a fake email impersonating Vinted saying the payment is pending and you need to ship now.

Red flags:

– "Can you give me your email to pay?"
– A "Vinted" email coming from a sketchy address (vinted-payment@gmail.com, etc.)
– "Payment is on hold, ship first"
– Pressure to ship quickly

Protection: NEVER share your email. Verify payment only inside the Vinted app (Sales tab).

2. The "parcel never arrived" (when it actually did)

How it works: The buyer receives your parcel but claims they never got it. Dispute opened. Either you refund or Vinted refunds the buyer.

You're vulnerable if: shipping without tracking, no photo of the parcel before sending, no drop-off receipt, uncertified pickup-point shipping.

You're protected if: shipping with tracking, photos of the parcel + contents before sealing, drop-off receipt kept, using Vinted's shipping system (the tracking number auto-syncs).

3. The item swap

How it works: The buyer receives your authentic item, swaps it with a fake or a damaged piece, then opens a "not as described" dispute showing photos of the swap.

Protection: Photograph your item from every angle BEFORE shipping with a unique visible element (intact tag, your specific flaw, anti-theft tag thread). In a dispute these photos are evidence.

4. The "external link" payment

How it works: The buyer sends you a link like "vinted-fr.com/payment/xyz" to finalize. It's a phishing site that steals your credentials or banking info.

Protection: Don't click any link inside Vinted messages. Real payments happen only via the Buy button in the app.

5. Negotiate then ghost

How it works: The buyer drags out negotiation, gets you to lower the price, "reserves" the item with a promise to buy, then vanishes. You blocked your item for 2 weeks for nothing.

Protection: No reservation without payment. The item stays actively listed until payment clears.

6. The fake return

How it works: The buyer opens a "not as described" dispute, gets a return label, sends you back an empty box or a different item (often a stone, an old garment, or empty packaging). You receive "the return", you refund, but you've lost your item.

Protection: Film the unboxing of the returned parcel. If the contents don't match, refuse the refund and send the video to Vinted support.

7. The WhatsApp / SMS scam

How it works: "Let's continue on WhatsApp to finalize faster." On WhatsApp the scammer sends a fake Western Union, MoneyGram or bank transfer receipt.

Protection: Refuse systematically. All exchanges stay on Vinted.

8. SMS / email phishing

How it works: Fake SMS or "Vinted" email telling you your account will be suspended unless you validate a link. The link leads to a fake Vinted that steals your credentials.

Protection: Vinted never asks for credentials by SMS/email. If in doubt, go directly to vinted.com (not via the link).

The 4 buyer-side scams

1. Stolen photos / fake items

The scammer uses photos found on Google or stolen from other profiles to sell an item they don't own. You pay, you get nothing or a counterfeit.

Protection: Reverse image search on Google Images. Ask for additional photos with a specific element (a pen next to it, a written date, etc.). If the seller refuses, scam.

2. "New" condition vs. reality

Item described as new but arrives worn, stained, damaged.

Protection: Ask for detailed photos of any defects. Ask specific questions about real condition (worn how many times? stained? pilling?). If the seller is evasive, red flag.

3. Counterfeits (luxury)

Branded item (Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Hermès, Rolex) at an abnormally low price. You receive a fake.

Protection: Ask for photos of labels, purchase invoice, serial number, certificate of authenticity. Be wary of prices >50% below market. Use Vinted Authenticity for items > 100€.

4. The empty parcel

You receive a parcel that weighs the expected amount (seller padded it) but when opened: empty or a different item.

Protection: Film the unboxing (evidence). Open a dispute within 2 days providing the video.

Vinted safety FAQ

Does Vinted refund in case of a scam?

Yes, if you use Vinted's built-in payment system (Buy button). Buyer Protection covers items not as described or never received. Any payment outside Vinted (direct PayPal, bank transfer) is NOT covered.

How do I report a scam on Vinted?

Scammer's profile -> Menu (3 dots) -> "Report member". Describe precisely with screenshots. You can also contact support via Settings -> Help. Always keep a written trail.

What if the buyer claims they didn't get the parcel?

If you have a tracking number proving delivery, Vinted will rule in your favour. Always ship tracked. Keep the drop-off receipt and tracking number inside Vinted.

Are PayPal payments safe on Vinted?

No, when used outside Vinted. Scammers push PayPal because they can open a PayPal dispute even after receipt. NEVER step outside Vinted's "Buy" button.

How do I know if a profile is trustworthy?

Check: account age (>6 months), number of positive reviews (>10), real profile photo, filled-in description, visible sales history. A new empty profile = red flag.

Does Vinted Authenticity protect against fakes?

Yes for items > 100€. The item passes through Vinted experts who verify authenticity before you receive the parcel. Paid service (~€5-10) but essential for luxury.

What if I get a fake "Vinted" email?

Don't click any links. Forward the email to phishing@vinted.fr. Vinted uses these reports to block scammers.
